Beyond Nordic Restrictions

Sweden maintains some of Europe's strictest drug policies—use and possession are prohibited even for personal amounts. For Swedes interested in ayahuasca, this creates a clear choice: underground ceremonies at home with significant legal and safety risks, or travelling to countries where plant medicine is legal and traditionally practiced.

This page covers the Swedish legal context, your options as a Nordic resident, and specific guidance for UK passport holders living in Sweden or those coordinating travel with UK-based friends and family.

Nordic Perspectives on Plant Medicine

Sweden's Strict Policy Context

Sweden's approach to drug policy differs from more liberal Nordic neighbours:

  • Zero tolerance philosophy: Swedish drug policy has historically emphasised prevention and enforcement over harm reduction
  • Use is criminalised: Unlike some countries that focus on supply, Sweden criminalises personal use
  • Strict enforcement: Drug laws are actively enforced

This context means underground ayahuasca ceremonies in Sweden carry real legal risk—more so than in countries with decriminalised personal use.

Regional Contrast

Sweden's policy stands in contrast to shifting attitudes elsewhere in the Nordic region:

  • Norway: A decriminalisation bill was proposed in 2021 (though it failed), and 51% of Norwegians expressed willingness to try psychedelics in medical contexts
  • Denmark: More harm-reduction oriented approach
  • Finland: Strict but with some research exemptions

Sweden remains conservative relative to its neighbours.

Why Many Swedes Look Abroad

Given domestic restrictions, Swedes interested in plant medicine generally have two options:

  1. European alternatives: Spain, Portugal, or (with caveats) the Netherlands
  2. Traditional source: Peru, where ayahuasca is legal and culturally embedded

Many Swedes choose Peru for reasons beyond just legality—traditional lineage, depth of container, and the medicine in its home environment.

Your Options

European Alternatives

As a Swedish resident, shorter-travel options exist:

Spain: Several retreat centres operate in Spain, particularly in Catalonia and the Canary Islands. Flights from Stockholm or Gothenburg are short. Spanish law doesn't explicitly prohibit ayahuasca in private ceremonial contexts.

Portugal: Portugal's 2001 decriminalisation creates a permissive environment. Some centres operate with relative openness.

Netherlands: Despite its reputation, Dutch ayahuasca legal status is currently unstable. Several operators have faced court challenges; some have paused operations. Research current status carefully.

UK Considerations

If you have UK ties—UK passport, UK residence, UK-based friends considering retreats together—additional factors apply:

  • UK law: DMT is Class A in the UK, the most serious classification
  • Underground UK ceremonies: Carry significant legal risk
  • Transiting through UK: UK drug law applies in airports

For UK passport holders living in Sweden, or Swedes travelling with UK friends, be aware of both jurisdictions.

Is Ayahuasca Legal in Sweden?

The Legal Framework

Swedish drug law prohibits both possession and use of narcotics. N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is classified as a narcotic under Swedish law.

Swedish Customs notes that it is prohibited to:

  • Possess narcotics (including for personal use)
  • Bring narcotics into or out of Sweden
  • Distribute or manufacture them

Swedish court decisions have clarified that processed plant material containing DMT can be treated as a narcotic preparation.

Underground Ceremonies

Despite strict laws, underground ayahuasca ceremonies occur in Sweden. We don't judge people seeking healing through these channels.

But Sweden's enforcement culture makes underground participation riskier than in countries with more relaxed policies. Beyond legal risk:

  • Variable medicine quality
  • Facilitators with limited training
  • Minimal medical screening

Why Swedes Choose Peru

Peru offers what Sweden cannot provide domestically and what European alternatives often lack: ayahuasca within its living cultural context, with complete legal clarity, administered by practitioners whose lineage stretches back generations.

Traditional Training and Lineage

In the Mestizo healing traditions around Iquitos, becoming a curandero requires years of apprenticeship: extended plant dietas (strict isolation and fasting with specific teacher plants), gradual transmission of icaros (healing songs), and supervised practice passed down through family lineages.

At Hummingbird Healing Centre, Maestro Manain is a fourth-generation Mestizo ayahuascero from the Iquitos area with over 45 years of experience. Lead facilitator Jim Davis has guided more than 1,400 ceremonies since 2010.

If you're comparing retreat centres, we've written a detailed guide on >how to choose an ayahuasca retreat—covering healer experience, safety protocols, and questions to ask before booking.

A Container Built for the Work

Swedish guests often appreciate structured, evidence-informed approaches. Our retreats provide:

  • 9 to 28 days of continuous immersion
  • Multiple ceremonies allowing systematic deepening
  • Daily integration circles with clear frameworks for processing
  • Complementary practices: Huachuma ceremonies, plant baths, meditation
  • Thorough medical screening before arrival
  • Conservative initial dosing based on your experience

Sweden-Specific Considerations

Medications and Healthcare

If you're under the care of a läkare (doctor), psychiatrist, or therapist in Sweden, careful planning is essential before any retreat.

Some medications are contraindicated with ayahuasca due to dangerous interactions. Others require supervised tapering. We conduct thorough medical screening and will discuss any concerns before you book.

For UK passport holders in Sweden: The same cautions apply; discuss with your prescribing clinician.

Important: This page provides information, not medical advice.

Practical Travel Tips for Nordic Guests

Based on hosting Swedish and Nordic guests over the years:

  • Plan for decompression time: Long-haul travel plus jungle conditions can be demanding. Arrive with buffer time.
  • Pack for humidity: Light, breathable clothing. The contrast with Swedish climate is significant.
  • Integration matters: Swedish guests often value practical, structured integration—journaling, routines, frameworks. Our program includes daily integration circles.

Seasonal Considerations

Some Swedish guests time retreats during the dark winter months—using the journey as a contrast to limited daylight at home. Others prefer travelling during Swedish summer when returning to long days supports integration. Both approaches work.

Travel Insurance

Swedish travel insurance varies by provider. Read exclusions carefully. Consider:

  • Comprehensive travel medical insurance
  • Medical evacuation coverage
  • Trip interruption protection

The Experience Was Better Than I Could Ever Imagined. I waited a month after my trip to write this review to see how I truly felt about the experience. One month later, I still do not have the words to fully describe how GRATEFUL I am for Jim, the staff & Ayahuasca. Hummingbird Healing Center has changed/saved my life. The lessons that I learned at his center have been lessons I have been seeking all my adult life. I originally booked the trip for depression issues. I had a lot of childhood trauma that I needed to work out. I suffered for more than 20 years and have tried many western medicines (prescriptions). I think western medicine is important but going back to let nature heal me is so liberating. I went to Hummingbird for a "cure" from depression but what I got out of the experiences is more than I could have asked for. It is one of those things where I knew it would help but I didn't know exactly how. I cry in gratitude every time I think about it. I learned things about myself, my past, and my mindset that I did not know or did not want to acknowledge. Some of the things that Ayahuasca showed me were hard pills to swallow and that usually is the case with Ayahuasca. Having a good GUIDE/HEALER is essential when you face difficult realities and new perceptions during and after the ceremony. When it comes to healing it is difficult physically, mentally, and emotionally, but Ayahuasca helps you make sense of it so that you can move past it. Jim gives you insight so you can move forward. The Peruvian Ayahuasca healer Don Fernando is powerful. He has been practicing plant medicine and healing for 40+ years They are a dynamic trio. I am grateful for the wisdom and realness that Jim provided before during and after each ceremony. I believe that I was given the tools and mindset at this healing center to not only change my life, heal, and grow but to help others as well. I already see changes in my job, my relationships, my family, and my beliefs and behaviors. I have gained a sense of peace that I have never known and I will continue to do inner work to keep it. Inner work post Ayahuasca ceremonies are super important. It's' called integration. Find a group or a coach who can assist you with integration. There are a lot of feelings, belief changes, and realizations that you will get at Hummingbird so soak it all in. Come with an open mind and heart. Enjoy living in the jungle for a few days/weeks, and let mother nature heal you. ******Please read all the emails Jim sends you, follow the instructions about the diet, and read the recommended books. This will help you get the MOST out of your investment. This is an INVESTMENT in YOU. Don't half assss it. Jim, if you read this --- THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING! I will see you again soon with more people who need your healing.

Amazing experience, highly recommended. For my 3-weeks ayahuasca retreat I had been looking for an experienced centre where I would be safe and taken care of. It was my first experience of this kind and I was quite nervous about it. Jim and his team were a great support, offering advice and always having an open ear to listen. I soon felt that I was in very good hands, with highly experienced people and that there was nothing to be afraid of. After completing the retreat, I knew even more than before how important it is choose the right place. Thank you for this great experience and the gift that I took home! The place is beautiful and big. The huts are comfortable and provide privacy. And the food is good!
