While Policy Catches Up
Norway stands at an interesting crossroads in drug policy. A 2021 survey found 51% of Norwegians willing to try psychedelics as part of medical treatment—one of the highest rates in Europe. That same year, the government introduced a bill proposing drug decriminalisation reform, signalling shifting attitudes at the policy level.
The bill didn't pass. And while enforcement has shifted toward rehabilitation over punishment, ayahuasca remains illegal in Norway—DMT is classified as a prohibited drug under Norwegian narcotics law.
For Norwegians called to work with ayahuasca, Peru offers what Norway cannot yet provide: legal access to traditional ceremony with lineage healers, in the medicine's home environment.
Norway's Shifting Drug Policy Landscape
Where Norway Stands
Norway's drug policy has been evolving:
- 2021: The government introduced a bill proposing decriminalisation of personal drug use—a significant shift for a country historically known for strict enforcement
- 2021: The bill failed in parliament, lacking sufficient support
- Post-2021: Despite the legislative failure, policies around dealing with drug use have shifted more toward rehabilitation than punishment
- Public opinion: Surveys show majority openness to psychedelic-assisted therapy
This context matters. Norway isn't static—attitudes are changing, even if legislation hasn't caught up.
Current Legal Reality
Despite evolving attitudes, N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) remains classified as a prohibited drug under Norwegian drug laws. Possession, consumption, and distribution of ayahuasca are all prohibited.
The gap between public opinion and current law creates an uncomfortable situation for Norwegians interested in plant medicine. Some wait for policy to change. Others travel to where the medicine is already legal.
Why Norwegians Choose Peru
While Norwegian policy evolves, Peru offers something available now: ayahuasca within its living cultural context, with complete legal clarity, administered by practitioners whose lineage stretches back generations.
No Waiting for Legislation
Some Norwegians prefer to wait for domestic policy to change. Others feel called to the work now. Peru allows you to proceed without waiting—and without the legal and safety risks of underground ceremonies at home.
Traditional Lineage
In the Mestizo healing traditions around Iquitos, becoming a curandero requires years of apprenticeship: extended plant dietas (strict isolation and fasting with specific teacher plants), gradual transmission of icaros (healing songs), and supervised practice passed down through family lineages.
At Hummingbird Healing Centre, Maestro Manain is a fourth-generation Mestizo ayahuascero from the Iquitos area with over 45 years of experience. Lead facilitator Jim Davis has guided more than 1,400 ceremonies since 2010.
If you're comparing retreat centres, we've written a detailed guide on >how to choose an ayahuasca retreat—covering healer experience, safety protocols, and questions to ask before booking.

Our retreats provide:
- 9 to 28 days of continuous immersion
- Multiple ceremonies allowing deeper work than single nights

Is Ayahuasca Legal in Norway?
DMT Classification
Under Norwegian drug laws, N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is classified as a prohibited drug. Because traditional ayahuasca contains DMT, activities involving ayahuasca—possession, consumption, distribution—are prohibited.
Norwegian court decisions have clarified that processed plant material containing DMT can be treated as a narcotic preparation under Norwegian law.
Underground Ceremonies in Norway
It is possible to find underground ayahuasca ceremonies in Norway. We don't judge people seeking healing through these channels.
But compared to working in a location where the medicine is legal and administered by traditionally trained practitioners, underground ceremonies add risk:
- Legal exposure
- Variable medicine quality
- Facilitators with limited training—often people who attended retreats themselves rather than completing traditional apprenticeships
- Minimal medical screening
European Alternatives
As a Norwegian, you have shorter-travel options:
- Spain: Several retreat centres operate, particularly in Catalonia and Canary Islands
- Portugal: Decriminalised environment; some centres operate
- Netherlands: Legal status currently unstable; some operators have paused
These may suit some people. Many Norwegians still choose Peru for the reasons above—legal certainty, traditional lineage, depth of container.
Norway-Specific Considerations
Medications and Healthcare
If you're under the care of a fastlege (GP), psychiatrist, or therapist in Norway, careful planning is essential before any retreat.
Some medications are contraindicated with ayahuasca due to dangerous interactions. Others require supervised tapering. We conduct thorough medical screening and will discuss any concerns before you book.
Travel Insurance
Norwegian health coverage has limitations abroad. For travel to Peru, consider:
- Comprehensive travel medical insurance
- Medical evacuation coverage
- Trip interruption protection
Read policy exclusions carefully regarding activities involving controlled substances.
Integration Support in Norway
Integration—translating ceremony insights into lasting change—matters as much as the retreat itself. Before you travel, consider lining up:
- A therapist or counsellor you trust
- An integration coach with plant medicine experience
- A supportive community that respects privacy
Norway's psychedelic integration landscape is developing alongside the broader policy conversation.
Seasonal Considerations
Many Norwegians find that timing a retreat during Norwegian winter—when daylight is limited and energy naturally lower—works well. The contrast of moving from dark Norwegian winter to Amazon jungle can be powerful. Others prefer travelling during Norwegian summer when returning to long daylight supports integration.
