The Furthest Journey
From Auckland or Wellington to the Peruvian Amazon is one of the longest journeys you can make for an ayahuasca retreat. We won't pretend otherwise—24 to 30+ hours of travel, crossing hemispheres, arriving in jungle that couldn't be more different from home.
But New Zealanders keep making the trip. Perhaps it's because there's nowhere closer that's legal: Australia has the same restrictions, and Asia offers no traditional ayahuasca options. For Kiwis seeking genuine plant medicine work with experienced healers, Peru remains the destination.
This page covers what you need to know:
- Why the journey is worth it
- The legal situation at home
- Practical guidance for making the trip from New Zealand
Why Travel to Peru From New Zealand
No Nearby Legal Alternatives
Let's be direct about your options:
- New Zealand classifies DMT as a Class A controlled drug—the most serious category
- Australia has identical restrictions (Schedule 9)
- Southeast Asia has harsh drug penalties and no ayahuasca tradition
- Pacific Islands offer no established options
Unlike Europeans who can fly to Spain or Portugal, or Canadians who can access Santo Daime churches domestically, New Zealanders seeking legal ayahuasca have one practical option: travel to South America.
The Journey Creates the Container
Here's what we've learned from hosting New Zealanders over the years: the long journey isn't just an obstacle to overcome—it becomes part of the transformation.
When you travel 30 hours across the world, you're not just changing locations. You're leaving your daily identity behind. The person who boards the plane in Auckland, with their job and relationships and familiar patterns, gets deconstructed somewhere over the Pacific. By the time you reach the Amazon, you've already begun the process of letting go.
Many Kiwi guests tell us the journey home served a similar function—integration time, processing space, a gradual return to ordinary life rather than an abrupt re-entry.
Authentic Lineage, Dedicated Container
The difference between travelling this far and attempting underground options at home isn't just legal—it's qualitative.
In the Mestizo healing traditions around Iquitos, becoming a curandero requires years of apprenticeship: extended plant dietas, gradual transmission of icaros (healing songs), and supervised practice passed down through family lineages.
At Hummingbird Healing Centre, Maestro Manain is a fourth-generation Mestizo ayahuascero from the Iquitos area with over 45 years of experience. Lead facilitator Jim Davis has guided more than 1,400 ceremonies since 2010.
This depth of experience matters when the medicine brings up difficult material—and it's simply not available in New Zealand.
If you're comparing retreat centres, we've written a detailed guide on >how to choose an ayahuasca retreat—covering healer experience, safety protocols, and questions to ask before booking.
Is Ayahuasca Legal in New Zealand?
DMT is a Class A Controlled Drug
New Zealand's Misuse of Drugs Act 1975 lists DMT (N,N-Dimethyltryptamine) in Schedule 1 (Class A controlled drugs)—the most serious classification.
Because traditional ayahuasca preparations contain DMT, activities involving ayahuasca—possession, supply, importation—create serious legal risk in New Zealand.
Underground Ceremonies
Despite the legal status, underground ayahuasca ceremonies do occur in New Zealand—in private homes and rural properties. We don't judge people who attend these; many are genuinely seeking healing.
But compared to working where the medicine is legal and administered by traditionally trained practitioners, underground ceremonies add avoidable risk:
- Serious legal exposure under Class A drug laws
- Variable medicine quality
- Facilitators with limited training
- Minimal medical screening
Border and Customs
New Zealand Customs notes limited exemptions for travellers carrying controlled drugs lawfully supplied overseas for medical treatment. Ayahuasca doesn't qualify.
Do not attempt to carry any ayahuasca or DMT-containing materials into or out of New Zealand.
New Zealand-Specific Considerations
Medications and Healthcare
If you're under the care of a GP, psychiatrist, or mental health provider in New Zealand, careful planning is essential before any retreat.
Some medications are contraindicated with ayahuasca due to dangerous interactions (particularly SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, and some blood pressure medications). Others require supervised tapering periods. We conduct thorough medical screening and will discuss any concerns before you book.
Long-Haul Travel: Practical Tips
New Zealand to Peru is a significant journey. Here's what experienced travellers recommend:
Before departure:
- Book flights with adequate connection times
- Consider breaking the journey—an overnight in Santiago, Lima, or a US hub
- Start adjusting sleep patterns a few days before
Managing the distance:
- Peru is 17-19 hours behind New Zealand depending on daylight saving
- Arrive at least one day before retreat start to recover
- Hydrate aggressively—long flights are dehydrating
- Don't schedule major commitments for the first week after returning
The journey as preparation:
- Many guests find the travel time useful for mental preparation
- Bring a journal, intention-setting materials
- Use the journey home for initial integration reflection
Travel Insurance
New Zealand's healthcare doesn't cover you abroad. For travel to Peru, consider:
- Comprehensive travel medical insurance with adequate coverage
- Medical evacuation coverage (repatriation from the Amazon is expensive)
- Trip interruption protection
Read policy exclusions carefully. Some insurers exclude claims related to activities involving controlled substances, even where legal.
Integration Support in New Zealand
Integration—translating ceremony insights into lasting change—matters as much as the retreat itself. Before you travel, consider lining up:
- A therapist or counsellor you trust
- An integration coach with plant medicine experience
- A supportive community that respects privacy
The New Zealand psychedelic integration landscape is still developing. Research options before your retreat.
