Finding Legal Clarity
Interest in plant medicine has grown steadily in Germany, driven by research emerging from institutions worldwide and increasing media coverage. Yet finding a legitimate ayahuasca retreat presents challenges. DMT—the primary psychoactive compound in ayahuasca—is listed in Anlage I of the German Narcotics Act (Betäubungsmittelgesetz), making possession and supply illegal.
While some Germans travel to Spain, Portugal, or the Netherlands for closer-to-home options, many ultimately choose Peru—where ayahuasca is part of a living tradition, not an imported practice adapted to European contexts.
This page covers:
- The legal situation in Germany
- Your options in Europe
- What the German Foreign Office says about ayahuasca ceremonies abroad
- Why Peru remains the destination of choice for many German guests
Is Ayahuasca Legal in Germany?
In Germany, DMT (N,N-Dimethyltryptamine) is classified as a non-marketable narcotic in Anlage I of the Betäubungsmittelgesetz (BtMG)—the most restrictive category under German drug law.
Because traditional ayahuasca preparations contain DMT, activities involving ayahuasca—possession, supply, importation—create serious legal risk in Germany. There are no religious exemptions comparable to those in some other countries.
Underground Ceremonies in Germany
It is possible to find underground ayahuasca ceremonies in Germany—in private homes, rented venues, or rural retreats. We don't judge people who attend these events. Many are genuinely seeking healing.
But compared to working in a location where the medicine is legal, consistently sourced, and administered by practitioners with decades of training, underground ceremonies add avoidable risk:
- Significant legal exposure under German law
- Variable medicine quality without established supply chains
- Facilitators with limited training—often people who attended retreats and then began leading ceremonies
- Minimal or no medical screening
For those seeking deep healing work, these risks matter.

European Alternatives
If you're not ready to travel to South America, several European destinations offer legal or semi-legal ayahuasca experiences with shorter travel from Germany.
Spain
Several retreat centres operate in Spain, particularly in Catalonia and the Canary Islands. Spanish law doesn't explicitly prohibit ayahuasca in private ceremonial contexts, though the legal framework remains ambiguous. Many retreats bring in South American facilitators for ceremonies.
Portugal
Portugal's 2001 decriminalisation of personal drug use creates a more permissive environment. Some retreat centres operate here, typically led by Western facilitators who trained in South America.
Netherlands
The Netherlands has a reputation for progressive drug policy, but ayahuasca's legal status is more complex than many assume. DMT is a Schedule I substance under the Opium Act, and several operators have faced court challenges. Some have paused operations pending legal clarity. Research carefully before considering Dutch options.
Why Many Germans Still Choose Peru
Closer options exist, but many German guests tell us they ultimately chose Peru because:
- Authentic lineage: Working with healers whose families have practiced for generations, not Europeans who completed training courses
- Cultural immersion: Ayahuasca in its origin context feels different than ayahuasca in a European setting
- Legal certainty: No grey areas, no anxiety about legal status
- Depth of experience: Multi-week retreats with multiple ceremonies, not weekend experiences
The Auswärtiges Amt Travel Warning
Germany's Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt) includes a specific caution in its Peru travel guidance:
Participation in shamanic rituals involving substances such as Ayahuasca and San Pedro has led to serious illness and even deaths. Use only official providers and disclose all health conditions fully.
We include this not to discourage travel, but because transparency builds trust. The warning underscores exactly what we believe: choosing a reputable, established centre with clear safety standards matters.
At Hummingbird Healing Centre, we've operated since 2010 with:
- Comprehensive medical screening before arrival
- Conservative initial dosing
- Experienced facilitators (1,400+ ceremonies)
- Clear emergency protocols
The Auswärtiges Amt's advice aligns with our approach: work with established providers, disclose health conditions, take safety seriously.
Why Germans Choose Peru
Peru offers something that can't be replicated in Europe: ayahuasca within its living cultural context, administered by practitioners whose lineage stretches back generations.
Traditional Training and Lineage
In the Mestizo healing traditions around Iquitos, becoming a curandero requires years of apprenticeship: extended plant dietas (strict isolation and fasting with specific teacher plants), gradual transmission of icaros (healing songs), and supervised practice passed down through family lineages. This isn't a weekend certification—it's a decade-long process of preparation.
At Hummingbird Healing Centre, Maestro Manain is a fourth-generation Mestizo ayahuascero from the Iquitos area with over 45 years of experience. Lead facilitator Jim Davis has guided more than 1,400 ceremonies since 2010.
If you're comparing retreat centres, we've written a detailed guide on >how to choose an ayahuasca retreat—covering healer experience, safety protocols, and questions to ask before booking.
Structure and Rigour
German guests often appreciate our structured approach:
- Thorough medical screening before you arrive
- Conservative initial dosing based on your experience
- Daily integration circles with clear frameworks for processing
- Multiple ceremonies allowing systematic deepening over time
- Complementary practices: Huachuma ceremonies, plant baths, meditation
This isn't improvised spirituality—it's a carefully designed container for transformation.
Germany-Specific Considerations
Medications and Healthcare
Many German guests are supported by a Hausarzt, psychiatrist, or therapist—whether through statutory insurance (GKV) or private coverage. If you take prescription medication, especially psychiatric medications, careful planning is essential.
Some medications are contraindicated with ayahuasca due to dangerous interactions (particularly SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, and some blood pressure medications). Others require supervised tapering. We conduct thorough medical screening and will discuss any concerns before you book.
Travel Insurance (Auslandskrankenversicherung)
German statutory health insurance (GKV) provides limited coverage outside Europe. For travel to Peru, most German guests arrange:
- Comprehensive travel medical insurance (Auslandskrankenversicherung) with adequate coverage limits
- Medical evacuation coverage (Rückholversicherung)
- Trip interruption/cancellation protection
Read policy exclusions carefully. Some insurers exclude claims related to activities involving controlled substances, even in countries where those substances are legal.
Integration Support in Germany
Integration—translating ceremony insights into lasting change—is where the real work happens. Before you travel, consider lining up:
- A therapist or counsellor you trust (German-speaking support often matters for deep emotional work)
- An integration coach with experience in plant medicine contexts
- A supportive community that respects confidentiality
The German psychedelic integration landscape is developing. Research options before your retreat so support is waiting when you return.
