Palms in the Amazon jungle

Beyond Santo Daime

Canada occupies a unique position in the ayahuasca landscape. While DMT remains a controlled substance under federal law, a handful of churches have received legal exemptions to serve ayahuasca as a religious sacrament. Canadians have options that residents of most countries don't.

But these exemptions come with specific contexts—religious ceremonies within particular traditions, typically in urban settings, usually single-ceremony formats. For Canadians who don't connect with the Santo Daime or UDV paths, or who seek a more immersive multi-day retreat experience, Peru offers something different: weeks in the Amazon with lineage healers, multiple ceremonies, and a container built for deep transformation.

This page covers your options: legal ayahuasca within Canada, the broader legal landscape, and what Peru offers that Canada can't.

Legal Ayahuasca in Canada

Section 56 Exemptions

Canada's Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) includes a mechanism called Section 56 exemptions, which allows Health Canada to grant permission for otherwise-prohibited activities in specific circumstances—typically for religious, medical, or scientific purposes.

As of 2024, six churches across Canada have received exemptions allowing them to legally import and serve ayahuasca as part of their religious practice.

Santo Daime Churches (4 exemptions)

The Santo Daime tradition originated in Brazil in the 1930s, blending Christian, African, and indigenous Amazonian elements. Ceremonies center on drinking Daime (their term for ayahuasca) while singing hymns, wearing white, and participating in structured ritual.

Legally operating Santo Daime churches in Canada include:

  • Céu de Toronto — Toronto, Ontario
  • Céu do Montreal — Montreal, Quebec (one of the first two exemptions granted in 2017)
  • Céu do Vale da Vida — Val-David, Quebec
  • Centre for Universal Illumination Luz Divina — Winnipeg, Manitoba

Participation requires joining the church and undergoing their vetting process. These are religious services within a specific tradition, not open-to-the-public retreat experiences.

União do Vegetal (UDV)

The União do Vegetal is another Brazilian church tradition with roots in ayahuasca practice. At least one Canadian UDV chapter has received exemption status.

Other Exemptions

In July 2023, the Companionship of the Sacred Vine received an exemption to serve ayahuasca in traditional shamanic (rather than Brazilian syncretic) ceremony format.

What These Options Offer

Legal ayahuasca in Canada means:

  • No legal risk for participants
  • Medicine that's legally sourced and imported
  • Established organizations with some oversight

But there are limitations:

  • Religious context required — These are church services, not secular retreats
  • Single-ceremony format — Typically one ceremony per gathering, not multi-day immersions
  • Urban settings — Ceremonies in city venues, not jungle environments
  • Specific traditions — The Santo Daime format may not resonate with everyone

For Canadians who feel called to these traditions, the exempted churches offer a legal path. For those seeking something different, Peru provides an alternative.

USA Options

The United States also has legal ayahuasca options that may be accessible to Canadians. The UDV and Santo Daime churches operate legally under Religious Freedom Restoration Act protections, following a 2006 Supreme Court decision. Several Native American Church affiliates also offer ceremonies under religious exemption frameworks.

Beyond these clearly legal options, a number of retreat centres operate in legally ambiguous territory—not explicitly authorized, but not actively prosecuted. Colorado decriminalized certain plant medicines in 2022, creating additional grey areas.

If proximity matters to you, researching USA options may be worthwhile. The legal landscape is complex and evolving, so verify current status directly with any venue you consider.

The Broader Legal Landscape in Canada

Outside of exempted religious contexts, ayahuasca remains controlled in Canada.

DMT (N,N-Dimethyltryptamine) is listed in Schedule III of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. Because traditional ayahuasca contains DMT, activities involving ayahuasca—possession, distribution, importation—create legal risk for anyone operating without an exemption.

Underground Ceremonies

Despite the legal status, underground and semi-private ayahuasca ceremonies occur across Canada—in private homes, rented retreat venues, and rural properties. Some operate discreetly; others advertise fairly openly online.

We don't judge people who attend these ceremonies. Many are seeking genuine healing. But compared to legal options (whether in Canada or abroad), underground ceremonies add risk:

  • Legal exposure for organisers and potentially participants
  • Variable medicine quality without legal import channels
  • Facilitator training varies widely — from those with years of traditional apprenticeship to those who attended a few retreats and started leading ceremonies
  • Medical screening may be minimal or absent

The exempted churches offer one legal path. Peru offers another.

Why Many Canadians Choose Peru

The exempted churches provide legal access within specific religious frameworks. Peru offers something structurally different.

Traditional Lineage, Dedicated Container

In the Amazon, ayahuasca exists within healing lineages that have developed over generations. Becoming a curandero in the Mestizo traditions around Iquitos requires years of apprenticeship: extended plant dietas (strict isolation and fasting with specific teacher plants), gradual transmission of icaros (healing songs), and supervised practice passed down through family lineages.

This depth of training creates a different kind of ceremony than what most facilitators—whether in Canadian underground circles or even some South American retreat centres—can offer.

At Hummingbird Healing Centre, Maestro Manain is a fourth-generation Mestizo ayahuascero from the Iquitos area with over 45 years of experience. Lead facilitator Jim Davis has guided more than 1,400 ceremonies since 2010.

If you're comparing retreat centres, we've written a detailed guide on >how to choose an ayahuasca retreat—covering healer experience, safety protocols, and questions to ask before booking.

Multi-Day Immersion vs. Single Ceremonies

The exempted Canadian churches typically offer single-ceremony gatherings. You arrive, participate in a ceremony that night, and return home the next day.

Our retreats work differently:

  • 9 to 28 days of continuous immersion
  • Multiple ceremonies (4-12+ depending on retreat length) allowing deeper layers to emerge over time
  • Daily integration circles to process what arises
  • Complementary practices: Huachuma (San Pedro) ceremonies, plant baths, jungle walks, meditation
  • Preparation and aftercare built into the experience

For some people, single ceremonies within a church community work well. For others, the depth of multi-week immersion allows transformation that single nights can't access.

Environment Matters

There's a difference between drinking ayahuasca in an urban community hall and drinking it in the Amazon jungle, surrounded by the sounds of the forest, with the medicine in its home environment.

We're not dismissing urban ceremonies—sacred space can be created anywhere. But many Canadians tell us the jungle setting itself was part of their healing. The separation from daily life, the immersion in nature, the feeling of being far from email and obligations—these create a container that supports letting go in ways that weeknight ceremonies close to home may not.

Canada-Specific Considerations

Medications and Healthcare

If you're under the care of a family doctor, psychiatrist, or therapist—whether through provincial health systems or private providers—careful planning is essential before any retreat.

Some medications are contraindicated with ayahuasca due to dangerous interactions (particularly SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, and some blood pressure medications). Others require supervised tapering periods. We conduct thorough medical screening and will discuss any concerns before you book.

Important: This page provides information, not medical advice. Discuss planned retreat participation with your prescribing clinician.

Travel Insurance and Out-of-Province/Country Care

Provincial health coverage is limited outside Canada—and even outside your home province. For travel to Peru, consider:

  • Comprehensive travel medical insurance with adequate coverage limits
  • Medical evacuation coverage (repatriation from the Amazon can be expensive)
  • Trip interruption/cancellation protection (helpful given long routing and potential weather disruptions)

Read policy exclusions carefully. Some insurers exclude claims related to activities involving controlled substances, even in countries where those substances are legal.

Distance and Jet Lag

Canada is big. Depending on where you live, getting to Peru may involve:

  • East coast (Toronto, Montreal): 10-12 hours to Lima
  • West coast (Vancouver): 12-14 hours to Lima
  • Central/Prairie provinces: Connections through Toronto, Houston, or LA

Peru is 0-3 hours behind Eastern time depending on daylight saving, so jet lag is minimal for Eastern Canadians. Western Canadians have more adjustment.

Many guests find it helpful to:

  • Arrive in Lima with a buffer day to rest and ensure luggage arrives
  • Avoid heavy commitments immediately after returning home
  • Protect integration time—especially during Canadian winter months when mood and energy may already be affected

Integration Support in Canada

The psychedelic integration landscape in Canada is developing. Before you travel, consider lining up:

  • A therapist or counsellor you trust (provincial services or private)
  • An integration coach with experience in plant medicine contexts
  • A supportive community that respects privacy

Several Canadian organisations focus on psychedelic harm reduction and integration. Research these before your retreat so you have support waiting when you return.

Travel From Canada to Peru

Visa Requirements

Good news: Canadian citizens do not need a tourist visa for Peru for stays less than 90 days within a 365-day period.

  • Your passport must be valid for at least six months from your date of entry

Getting There

From Canada, travel typically involves:

  1. Canada to Lima
    • Toronto/Montreal → Lima: ~8-10 hours (direct flights available)
    • Vancouver → Lima: ~10-12 hours (usually via Houston, LA, or Mexico City)
    • Calgary/Edmonton → Lima: Connections through US hubs or Toronto
  2. Lima to Iquitos — Domestic flight (approximately 2 hours). Several airlines, multiple daily flights.
  3. Iquitos to the centre — We arrange ground transport to Hummingbird Healing Centre.

Recommendations:

  • Book adequate connection times, especially if transiting through US airports (immigration queues can be long)
  • Consider arriving in Lima a day early—worthwhile city, excellent food, reduces travel stress
  • Lima's time zone is close to Eastern, so jet lag is manageable for most Canadians

The Experience Was Better Than I Could Ever Imagined. I waited a month after my trip to write this review to see how I truly felt about the experience. One month later, I still do not have the words to fully describe how GRATEFUL I am for Jim, the staff & Ayahuasca. Hummingbird Healing Center has changed/saved my life. The lessons that I learned at his center have been lessons I have been seeking all my adult life. I originally booked the trip for depression issues. I had a lot of childhood trauma that I needed to work out. I suffered for more than 20 years and have tried many western medicines (prescriptions). I think western medicine is important but going back to let nature heal me is so liberating. I went to Hummingbird for a "cure" from depression but what I got out of the experiences is more than I could have asked for. It is one of those things where I knew it would help but I didn't know exactly how. I cry in gratitude every time I think about it. I learned things about myself, my past, and my mindset that I did not know or did not want to acknowledge. Some of the things that Ayahuasca showed me were hard pills to swallow and that usually is the case with Ayahuasca. Having a good GUIDE/HEALER is essential when you face difficult realities and new perceptions during and after the ceremony. When it comes to healing it is difficult physically, mentally, and emotionally, but Ayahuasca helps you make sense of it so that you can move past it. Jim gives you insight so you can move forward. The Peruvian Ayahuasca healer Don Fernando is powerful. He has been practicing plant medicine and healing for 40+ years They are a dynamic trio. I am grateful for the wisdom and realness that Jim provided before during and after each ceremony. I believe that I was given the tools and mindset at this healing center to not only change my life, heal, and grow but to help others as well. I already see changes in my job, my relationships, my family, and my beliefs and behaviors. I have gained a sense of peace that I have never known and I will continue to do inner work to keep it. Inner work post Ayahuasca ceremonies are super important. It's' called integration. Find a group or a coach who can assist you with integration. There are a lot of feelings, belief changes, and realizations that you will get at Hummingbird so soak it all in. Come with an open mind and heart. Enjoy living in the jungle for a few days/weeks, and let mother nature heal you. ******Please read all the emails Jim sends you, follow the instructions about the diet, and read the recommended books. This will help you get the MOST out of your investment. This is an INVESTMENT in YOU. Don't half assss it. Jim, if you read this --- THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING! I will see you again soon with more people who need your healing.

Amazing experience, highly recommended. For my 3-weeks ayahuasca retreat I had been looking for an experienced centre where I would be safe and taken care of. It was my first experience of this kind and I was quite nervous about it. Jim and his team were a great support, offering advice and always having an open ear to listen. I soon felt that I was in very good hands, with highly experienced people and that there was nothing to be afraid of. After completing the retreat, I knew even more than before how important it is choose the right place. Thank you for this great experience and the gift that I took home! The place is beautiful and big. The huts are comfortable and provide privacy. And the food is good!
